Why automatic

Why more Kerry learners are choosing automatic

Most new cars sold in Ireland today have no clutch pedal at all. Learning in an automatic matches the car you are most likely to drive in the future.

of new cars registered in Ireland in January 2026 were automatic. Source: SIMI

of the new car market was battery electric by August 2026, and every electric car is an automatic. Source: SIMI

Who automatic lessons suit best

  • Nervous learners who find clutch, gears and observation a lot to manage at once.
  • Students and busy learners who want to reach test standard in fewer hours.
  • Anyone who has stalled their way through manual lessons and lost confidence.
  • Drivers who own, or plan to buy, an automatic, hybrid or electric car.

Code 78: what an automatic licence really means

If you pass your test in an automatic, your Irish licence carries Code 78. You can only drive automatic cars until you pass a driving test in a manual.

The restriction is not permanent

  • You do not need to sit the Driver Theory Test again to move to a manual licence.
  • While you practise in a manual, you are treated as a learner in that car, so L-plates and accompaniment rules apply.
  • If you do not pass the manual test, you can keep driving automatics.

Who should consider Manual Lessons:

If you are likely to need a manual car or van for work, such as a farm jeep, a company van or an employer's vehicle.

While a lot of companies have now gone Automatic & Electric, some still use Manual Vehicles.

If you have any doubts we can discuss them before you start your Automatic Lessons in Tralee.

Your route to a full licence

The Automatic learning  RSA process

Automatic learners follow exactly the same steps as manual learners.

01

Theory test and learner permit

Pass the Driver Theory Test, then apply for your learner permit through the NDLS. Study the Theory Test official app to help you pass.

02

Your 12 EDT lessons

Essential Driver Training is 12 lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor, or fewer if you qualify for reduced EDT. Only an ADI can deliver EDT, and your EDT lessons can all be done in an automatic car.

03

The six-month rule

You can apply for your test once you have your permit, but you will not be invited to sit it until you have held your first learner permit for six months and your ADI has recorded all 12 EDT lessons. Use that time to build experience.

04

Pre-test lessons and test day

In the final weeks, pre-test lessons move to mock tests on test

routes, we also cover the turnabout, reversing around a corner, hill starts and the busier junctions and roundabouts on the Tralee test routes. We offer pre-test  lessons in Automatic and Manual cars..

Lessons

How many automatic lessons will I need?

EDT sets the minimum at 12 lessons, but it is a starting point rather than a target. The RSA advises spreading EDT over six months and if possible practising with an experienced sponsor between lessons.

Your total lessons depends on your starting confidence and how often you practise. Because you are not spending early lessons on clutch control and stalling, more of each lesson goes on the skills to improve your driving in an Automatic.

The test

Is the automatic driving test easier?

The test itself is the same. The examiner assesses the same manoeuvres, observation, speed management and hazard awareness.

What changes is your workload. With no gear changes to think about, you can focus on mirrors, signals and planning ahead, which is where many tests are won or lost. However your driving must be at Test standard

Your first lessons

What you will learn first

  • The gear selector: P (Park), R (Reverse), N (Neutral) and D (Drive), and when to use each.
  • Using one foot: your right foot controls both the accelerator and the brake, and your left foot stays off the pedals.
  • Creep control: gentle brake pressure for slow, precise manoeuvres and parking.
  • Car control: Steering, Spped Control and much more
  • All round observation; Looking ahead and planing your route

When comparing instructors, check four things

  • Are they an RSA Approved Driving Instructor with years of experience and Google Reviews? The RSA publishes a register you can check.
  • Do they supply a modern Automatic Car?
  • Do the lessons count towards EDT, and are they recorded promptly?
  • Is pick-up and drop-off available from home, school, college or work?

FAQ

Automatic lessons: your questions

Can I take my driving test in an automatic car in Ireland?

Yes. You can sit your driving test in an automatic car and the test format is the same. Your licence will carry Code 78, which is for automatic vehicles.

Can I drive a manual car with an automatic licence?

No. To remove Code 78 you must pass a driving test in a manual car.

Do EDT lessons count if I learn in an automatic?

Yes. Your Approved Driving Instructor records EDT lessons completed in an automatic car exactly as they would for a manual.

Does an EV or hybrid count as automatic?

Yes. If the car has no clutch pedal, it is treated as an automatic for licensing purposes.

Can I switch from manual lessons to automatic?

Yes. EDT lessons you have already completed still count, and many learners switch after struggling with clutch control.

Should I learn manual just in case?

Only if you expect to need one, for example for a farm jeep, a work van or an employer's vehicle. With most new cars now automatic, many drivers never need a manual licence. If you do want a manual licence, we also offer manual pre-test lessons.
